Head Acupuncture

Head acupuncture, or scalp acupuncture, is a specialized acupuncture technique, which treats neurological, musculoskeletal, and chronic pain conditions like stroke sequelae, headaches, and anxiety, integrating traditional acupuncture with modern brain anatomy to influence the nervous system, often providing rapid relief by boosting blood flow and harmonizing brain function.

Dr. Fen Xie, Dr. Daniel Cai and Dr. Sarah Xie are direct disciples of Dr. Shunfa Jiao. They participated in the 2nd global mentorship program through the American TCM Society.

Dr. Shunfa Jiao
Dr. Shunfa Jiao is the founder of Jiao’s style head (or scalp) acupuncture and a neurosurgeon in Shan Xi Province, China. He published “Head Acupuncture Therapy” in March 18, 1971. Due to the efficacy of head acupuncture, in 1986, Dr. Jiao was awarded the A-class National Award for Major Scientific Research Achievements in Chinese Traditional Medicine by the Chinese government. He is currently the president of the Scalp Needling Professional Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine. Dr. Jiao used to be the director of the Health Bureau of Yuncheng District of Shanxi Province, the president of the People’s Hospital of Yuncheng District, the president of the Shanxi Acupuncture Association, and the executive director of the Chinese Acupuncture Society.

He continues to do research on how head acupuncture can treat many neurological conditions.

What it’s used for:

  • Neurological Conditions: Stroke recovery (motor/sensory deficits), traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s, vertigo, facial paralysis, sensory aphasia.
  • Musculoskeletal Issues: Chronic pain, headaches, migraines.
  • Mental/Emotional Health: Anxiety, depression, stress-related issues, insomnia.
  • Other: Tinnitus, digestive issues, improving hair health by increasing circulation.

How it works:

  • Stimulating scalp areas influences the cerebral cortex, regulating brain and body functions.
  • It can improve cerebral blood flow (CBF), modulate inflammation, and enhance neural compensation between brain zones.

Benefits:

  • Often provides immediate improvement with few needles.
  • Can offer long-term benefits for chronic conditions.
  • Considered safe, with few serious side effects.
